We went to the Edinburgh Farmer's Market today (www.edinburghcc.com/farm_market.htm)
It was really good, and our first trip to a farmer's market. About a quarter of the stalls were meat oriented (so no use to me, naturally!) but many of the other stalls were really interesting.
I bought myself some amazingly tasty cheese from Arran, really nice smoked cheddar with herbs through it. The extremely friendly man selling it said that all their cheese is vegetarian, so I had a taste of a few samples before I settled on my cheese of choice! Website at www.islandcheese.co.uk
There were stalls selling organic bread, vegetables, drinks, preserves, chocolate, cheeses, and lots more. I bought some exciting looking "exotic" mushrooms, which I'm going to stick in a risotto tonight!
The above photo was taken by my boyfriend, at a stall which sold exquisite looking vegan chocolate. If only I had a birthday coming up! It looked too nice for everyday snacking :)
The Edinburgh market has been voted the best certified Farmers Market of 2007 by FARMA
Farmer's markets are a great way for farmers to sell produce locally, reducing the shipping costs (and associated environmental impact), increasing their own profits, and bringing more interesting, fresh food to people.

I'm going to go back to the market, definitely!
